Calorie consumption during iDANCE training

Prof. Dr. Sc. Lana Ruzic from Faculty of Kinesiology, Zagreb University, Croatia, who is one of consultants on the development of the pilot project iDANCE Zone, was mentoring a bachelor’s degree work titled “Children’s physiological burden experienced during iDANCE training”. Here is the summary:

„Sedentary way of life is increasingly present in the younger age groups, including children. Due to the massive popularity of computer games, many children refuse participation in sports activities and avoid outdoor play, resulting in increased body mass index, and thus the risk of various diseases. The combination of computer games and physical activity of dance could motivate children to move.

The aim of this study was to determine the physiological burden and also children's satisfaction with iDANCE programme. Research included 11 girls and 10 boys, members of „Mrak korak“ club with average age of 10.66. The requirement for children to be involved in the research sample was a written parental consent and minimum attendancy of iDANCE classes twice a week for at least one month.

Results indicate that most of the training was conducted in the aerobic mode of medium intensity with an average heart rate of 147 bpm. An average maximum heart rate was 183 per minute suggesting that in some parts of the training intensity was very high.

Accordingly, consumption was at a satisfactory level of 229 kcal per hour. Based on the research and gained results it is possible to conclude that iDANCE meets the needs for play and movement, ensures development of skills and capabilites and preserves and improves health without any risks.“
